BIAL wary of opening second toll-free gate

The proposed road, which connects the City through East Bangalore - Whitefield, K R Puram and Indiranagar leading up to Hennur Ring Road junction - with the airport via Bagalur and Mailanahalli is being built by the airport authorities for a second entry point.

However, after two rounds of failed talks between the airport authorities and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) may decline to build a second road inside the airport owing to security reasons.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Major Works H Ravindra said the airport authorities were concerned about opening a second entry point due to security reasons.

However, the authorities have stated that they would give a portion of BIA land to the BBMP for extending the stretch connecting it to the existing road, he added.

Thus, the alternative road will join the existing NH-7 to enter the airport through the main gate. However, it is unclear if the second toll-free road will join the airport road either before or after the toll gate.

On the urgency to open an alternative road for people travelling to the airport, Ravindra said the BBMP would schedule a meeting about providing relief to travellers, later this week. With the National Highways Authority of India all set to toll the NH-7 for funding the expressway construction, people will have no alternative but to pay the user fee to get to the airport.

However, the BBMP officials say that the construction of road has been completed and that it is only awaiting the BIAL clearance to throw open the road for vehicle movement. The road through Bagalur, Kanoor, Chagalgatta and Mailanahalli will shorten the distance to the airport by 10 km.
