Q I am a teenager and I have large, open pores below my lips. These have blackened over time. How long does it take to effectively lighten the discolouration?

A Open pores usually occur on oily areas of the skin. After a good wash, apply cold rose water on the areas using cotton wool. Mix multani mitti (Fuller’s Earth), rose water and lemon juice into a paste and apply it on the area with open pores. Wash it off when dry. If your face is oily, apply this face on the entire face, avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Use a face scrub twice or thrice a week. Mix a little curd or rose water with rice powder and apply it on the open pores. Rub gently in small circular movements. You should be able to see a difference in 4-6 weeks.

Q I am 21 years old, 168 cm tall and weigh 43 kg. I suffer from Addison’s disease. How can I gain weight?

AWhen the immune system begins to attack your own tissues, damaging your adrenal glands, the condition is called Addison’s disease. Weight loss is usually inevitable in such a scenario. In order to manage weight loss, you need to eat high-energy, nutrient-rich foods. When you feel like you’ve built up an appetite, have an extra serving of carbohydrate-rich food items like roti, rice, dosa, idli or pasta. Protein-rich food such as dal, lean meat, egg and milk can make a difference to your weight. Try a banana and apple smoothie (made with skimmed milk). Fruit salads and a dollop of ice cream at least once a week may help. But all these diet suggestions must be first cleared with your doctor/ specialist.
