The 34th Additional City and Sessions Judge H R Srinivas awarded death sentence to Doddahanuma, Venkatesh, Munikrishna, Nalla Thimma and Lakshmi, for murdering Manjula (64), wife of HAL retired employee Keshava Rao Jamkhandi, before robbing her jewellery at Basavanagudi on October 22, 2000.

The Basavanagudi police began investigating the matter, after registering a case under Section 394 and 302 of the IPC. The convicts were arrested on January 31, 2001 and jewellery worth Rs three lakh was recovered from them. Later, a charge sheet was submitted before the court.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convict. All the five members of the gang have already been awarded the death sentence in 14 other cases.

The ruling has created a record of sorts as the Dandupalya gang has been awarded the death sentence in 15 cases and life imprisonment in four others. In all, the gang was convicted in 28 cases. Two other double murders are also pending against the gang.
The case is still not complete, as the Basavanagudi police will have to file an additional charge sheet against four other members of the gang before April 23.
