Last Updated 09 April 2011, 18:20 IST

Speaking to mediapersons in Bangalore, the minister said at present the State has a shortage of 972 doctors. Non availability of veterinary graduates is one of the reasons for dearth of doctors.  Moreover, there has been a drastic decline in the demand for veterinary seats. In order to fill the gap, diploma holders in veterinary sciences will be deputed in rural areas, he said.

As many as 800 students are studying at four veterinary colleges in the State. In the current year 113 students will be graduating. Thus, the State government has decided to recruit 100 retired veterinarians on contract basis. However, the State government’s proposal has not evoked any positive response so far, he added.
