A 20-year-old married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her house in north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar on Wednesday. Police suspect that the victim was electrocuted, and are yet to rule out involvement of foul play. Her family members allege dowry death.
Geeta Devi had married Deepak in 2011 and had a one-month-old son. Her in-laws were also staying with them in a rented house.
Police said she was found with her leg tied in live wires on Wednesday afternoon.
“A call was made to the police control room, after which, Geeta was rushed to Guru Teg
Bahadur Hospital. She was declared brought dead,” a police officer said.
Police are investigating whether her death was an accident or if Deepak and his family members killed her. “Circumstantial evidence does not point towards Geeta committing suicide,” the officer added.
Her body has been preserved for a post-mortem which will be conducted on Thursday. Police are yet to ascertain the cause of death as no external injury marks were found on her body.
“We also did not find any evidence of struggle at the spot. The room has also been inspected by a crime team,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, her parents have alleged that Deepak and his family members had been torturing her over dowry. Her brother told police that her in-laws were not satisfied by the dowry that they received at the time of marriage.
“They used to harass Geeta and force her to ask for cash and other articles from our parents,” Nitin told police.
Disagreement over the issue had also led to several heated arguments between Geeta and Deepak. These incidents, on several occasions, ended with Geeta being beaten up.
Police have questioned most of the family members of the couple along with their friends and neighbours.
A case of dowry harassment has been filed with Sonia Vihar police station. Charge of murder would only be added on the basis of the post-mortem report.
As the woman died within seven years of marriage, an SDM enquiry has also been initiated.
