If Gandhi were alive, he would've been corrupt: HDK.

If Gandhi were alive, he would've been corrupt: HDK.

That was former chief minister and JD(S) State President H D Kumaraswamy speaking in Hubli on Sunday.

Addressing the media here, Kumaraswamy said corruption had “badly affected” the common man throughout the nation in general and Karnataka in particular. He called upon the people of North Karnataka to launch a movement against the ‘corrupt’ BJP-led State government.

But at the end of the press conference, he took everyone by surprise by defending corruption. “Corruption has become inevitable. Contesting elections and pursuing politics without corruption is impossible in today’s context.” Going a step ahead, he made his quip about the Mahatma.

The former chief minister said he was “never involved” in corruption while implementing the government schemes and projects when he was chief minister. But he had received “donations from friends and well wishers” for strengthening the party and fighting elections.

“Anna Hazare’s fight against corruption has enlightened the nation about corruption in public life and has awakened the people to root out corruption. Taking a cue from Hazare’s movement, the people of North Karnataka too will have to wage a war against Yeddyurappa-led government for utterly neglecting the region, and its involvement in rampant corruption,” he said.

The government had totally neglected the development of North Karnataka. Implementation of Dr Nanjundappa Committee recommendations was not at all effective. Basic infrastructure facilities in most of the cities and towns in the region were still a far cry.
