Saleh ready for 'peaceful' transfer of power

Welcoming the “efforts” of the Gulf Cooperation Council in trying to end Yemen’s political crisis, the embattled president said he had no reservation in transferring power peacefully.

His statement came a day after the Gulf states asked him to hand over power to his deputy to pave way for a smooth transition.

Saleh, who is facing unprecedented protests against his regime, had last week rejected a proposal by Qatar that called for his exit, terming it a “blatant interference in Yemeni affairs”.

The opposition activists, meanwhile, protested in thousands in the cities of Sanaa, Taiz, Hudaida and Ibb to protest against the GCC plan.

A presidential statement said: “In compliance with statements (he) made several times ...the president has no reservation against transferring power peacefully and smoothly within the framework of the constitution”.
