The spokesman did not say where Gbagbo had gone but said UN troops were with him to guarantee his security. He was arrested in Ivory Coast’s main city after a week-long siege by forces loyal to his rival Alassane Ouattara.
Ouattara has promised that Gbagbo will not be harmed. However, there are reports that some of Gbagbo’s soldiers and militia have refused to surrender. Meanwhile, sporadic gunfire rang out on Tuesday after Ouattara called on all fighters to put down their arms now that the country’s longtime strongman has been captured.
More than one million civilians fled their homes and untold numbers were killed in the more than four-month power struggle between the two rivals.
Residents said that most of the combat had ceased, though sporadic gunfire continued on Tuesday. “After more than four months of crisis, marked by so many human lives lost, we are finally at the dawn of a new era of hope,” Ouattara said in an address to the nation.
