Police may book Nigerian drug peddlers under Goonda Act

Last Updated 12 April 2011, 19:53 IST

The City police are all set to book cocaine peddlers from Nigeria, J G Opusa and his associate Albert Mahama, under the Goonda Act. If that is done, the duo will be the first foreign nationals to be booked under the Act in Bangalore.

The police recently arrested Opusa and Mahama on charges of selling cocaine to students and hoteliers. They had been arrested at least three times for the same offence earlier.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar said: “All action under the existing law have failed to deter Opusa from indulging in drug-peddling, posing a threat the public health. In spite of punishment, he and his aide continued to sell the banned substance.

“These activities will have an adverse impact on the lives of young men and women in the City. Hence, the police are contemplating booking the duo under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act, 1985,” he added.
