Railways prepare 'blue print' for electrification of routes

As per the blue print, the focus is to take up those routes which already have substantial traffic and on those which are likely to become quite busy in the future, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

"The broad guidelines include electrification of routes which are already double lines and have substantial amount of traffic and routes on which doubling have been taken up or are under consideration for doubling," he said.

"Routes which form alternate routes giving relief to congested main line sections even if they are single line sections have also been identified for electrification," the official said.

Besides, routes which are feeder routes to the dedicated freight corridors are also planned to be electrified.

The vision document 2020 mentions that 33,000 kms of rail route would be electrified, which in effect would require additional electrification of 14,000 kms in 10 years at an investment of about Rs. 12,600 crores over the next ten years, the official said.

As on March 31 last year, 20,059 kms of the total route km was electrified, which is about 31.33 per cent of the total rail route.

At present, the entire high density network including the golden quadrilateral routes connecting the four metros are either electrified or works have been sanctioned for electrification.

The suburban sections of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad are also electrified.

Some of the rotues identified for electrification under the blue print include the mineral rich belt of Talcher-Sambalpur, Sambalpur-Jharsuguda, Sambalpur-Titlagarh, Titlagarh-Raipur, Vizianagaram-Titlagarh and  Damanjodi- Singapuram.

The Ahmedabad-Palanpur-Phulera-Ringus-Rewari-Delhi and Phulera-Jaipur-Bandikui-Alwar section is also included.

Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla, Vijayawada -Gudivada-Bhimavaram-Nidadavolu and Gudivada-Machilipatnam and Bhimavaram-Narsapur and Pakur–New Farakka- Malda Town-Kumedpur routes are also among the identified routes to be electrified.
