Govt to reward candidates who pass UPSC exams

The State Government has decided to reward all those who pass the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations from the State with a cash prize.

Kannada and Culture Minister Govind Karjol said the move will encourage people to take up the UPSC examinations. Only those who are born in Karnataka will be eligible to get the reward of Rs one lakh, he added.

Hitherto, the Government honoured only those who write the UPSC examinations like IAS in Kannada language. “From now on (2011-12 fiscal) there is no restriction that the candidates should write examination in Kannada for getting the honour,” he stated and added that a sum of Rs 25 lakh has been set aside for this purpose in the budget.

Karjol also announced that a statue of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara will be unveiled in London at a cost of Rs 3 crore. Neeraj Patil, the NRI and Mayor of Lambart, has taken up the task to ensure that the statue is installed.

He also announced to set up International Basava Centre, for which a sum of Rs 4 crore has been set aside. “I have not mentioned about the place where the centre will be established, but we are on the look out for land in Bangalore,” he said.

Announcing that Rs 10 crore has been allocated to conduct cultural activities along the State’s boundary areas, he said that  Gadinaadu Abhivrudhi Pradhikara’ has been told to chalk out programmes to utilize the funds.

To ensure the revenue documents in Moodi language be translated into Kannada, Karjol said that a sum of Rs 3 crore has been allocated to Kuvempu Basha Bharathi. “W are taking this up on top priority as the readers of Moodi language are becoming extinct.

Very few experts in the language are alive now. It is difficult to find one person in taluk now,” he said.

He also announced a sum of Rs 1 crore to develop Koliwad, the birth place of Kannada poet Kumaravyasa. As part of the programme, Kumaravyasa’s house at Koliwad will converted into a monument.

Karjol announced that the State will rejenuvate over 4,000 lakes during this year. He said that the tender process has begun and the work will be completed by May 31 before monsoon sets in.

He said each assembly constituency has been allocated Rs 5 crore to take up the lake development work, he said that the concerned deputy commissioners have been directed to identify the lakes to be developed. “The DCs have been directed by the Chief Minister himself to complete the work within given time frame. He has directed them to complete it before monsoon,” he said.
