Speaking after receiving felicitation from the Karnataka Rajya BJP Fishermen Vedike and DK district Women Fish sellers Federation at Town Hall on Saturday, he said  the fishermen leaders should chalk out a plan after discussing it with the elected representatives on the need for additional funds and submit to the government.

“The government is committed to uplift the fishermen and weavers in the State. All the fishermen should have a roof over their head within two years. Fisherwomen are given Rs 50,000 loan at the rate of 3 per cent interest. As all women repay the loan promptly in the district, the government does not have any problem in raising the amount from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000,” he promised.

Fish breeding centres will be started at Karanja in Bidar and Nugu in Mysore at the cost of Rs 2.5 crore to promote inland fishing.

He called upon the fisherwomen to educate their kids so that they can stand on their own feet and get empowered. About 2,000 Self Help Groups will be formed under Matsya Swawalambhana scheme. The work on the third phase of Mangalore and Malpe jetty has already commenced, the CM added.

Loan document was given to Yogini Karkera on the occasion. A sum of Rs 12 crore loan will be distributed among 2,400 fisherwomen from Mulki to Someshwara. The loan has already been distributed to 600 fisherwomen.

State BJP Fishermen Vedike President Ramachandra Baikampady handed over a gold coated vasthu fish to Chief Minister on the occasion.

Earlier speaking, Baikampady said “satellite based fishing is being carried out with the help of satellite in Gujrath. Similar satellite based fishing should be implemented in the State. In fact, a proposal of Rs 100 crore was submitted to the centre. About Rs 98 crore had been sanctioned for the same. Unless the state government enters into an MoU with the ISRO, the project can not be realised.” He said though 200 new medium sized fishing boats had ventured into fishing during the year, it will have an impact on fish population.

The fish meal units are polluting the sea by letting out the waste water from the unit.

Unless the government takes serious action against such polluting units, the fishermen will be in trouble, he added.   Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, Minister for Higher Education Dr V S Acharya and others were present.
