“There is a moral degradation in all fields and the judiciary is not an exception. Previously, the advocates were respected a lot. The community should try to restore the past glory of the profession,” said Jois.

The lawyers should also lead the nation in fight against corruption and help make the judiciary corruption-free. “If a lawyer is upright and honest, a judge can never become corrupt. A judge on his own will never ask the client to bribe him,” he said talking about corruption in judiciary.

In his inaugural address at first state-level meeting of the women advocates organised by the Federation of Women Advocate’s Association and District Women Advocate’s forum at NIE Golden Jubilee hall on Saturday, he said the judiciary was considered noble field to protect the righteous and punish the bad and guilty.

“In democracy, anyone can occupy seats of executive and legislature. But, a person can only become judge only when he completes law course and work as legal practitioner for a minimum of five years. There vests more responsibility on the judiciary to become a model for the other two institutions of the constitution and democracy,” he said.

Jois said the legal professionals, the teachers and doctors are for social service.
The lawyers  should desist from corruption, forging documents and creating false evidences before the court. They should also stop resorting to strike, which can hamper the service to society.

He also called upon the women lawyers present in big numbers in the function to educate their children on high moral values.

The moral education can only bring down the corruption levels in the country and the Lokpal bills wouldn’t be able to tackle the corruption,” Jois added.

District In-charge Minister S A Ramdas, MP Vishwanath, District Principal and Sessions Judge H P Sandesh, First Additional Principal Judge M G Uma, First Additional Civil Judge Hosagoundar, president of Federation of Karnataka Women Advocate’s Association Hemalatha Mahishi were present.

‘Can’t check corruption’

The implementation of Jan Lokpal Bill will not help in rooting out corruption from the country, said Rajyasabha member M Rama Jois here.

Talking to reporters here, he said such an Act can only create a fear among the corrupt while accepting bribe or carrying out irregularities. But, it cannot root out corruption.

“The draft committee for any bill can only be prepared by the members of Parliament. But, this committee involves people from outside the parliament.
