HDK backtracks on decision to quit politics

Last Updated 17 April 2011, 18:12 IST

When mediapersons on Sunday asked him as to when he would quit politics, the former chief minister said he chose to continue in the field as his fans were upset over his decision.
Kumaraswamy said: “Despite my relentless fight against corruption in the recent months, people of Karnataka continue to nurse reservations about my intentions. It made me rethink my priorities.

My followers threatened to commit suicide the moment I announced quitting politics. I am emotionally held back. Politics is like ‘Chakravyuha’, once entered it is difficult to come out. So, I have decided to continue in politics at least for a while.”

Sceptic about Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign, Kumaraswamy said Anna himself admitted that he would forfeit deposit if he contests elections.

“Why is he (Anna) fighting when he himself has no hope. What is he trying to prove now? Mahatma Gandhi sacrificed his life for the country, but look at the situation now.”
He said corruption has spread like cancer and the onus was on the civil society to root it out.

“You can’t have just one Anna Hazare. The country needs more such persons,” he added.
“However, when I air these views, I am being made the villain. I know I cannot bring about 100 per cent change by staying back in politics, but, I will try to achieve four to five per cent change,” he says.

Kumaraswmay, who charged Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and his ministerial colleagues with several scams, claimed he would expose more scams; he was just waiting for the outcome of the CEC report on mining.
