'Buddha' threatens voters

Last Updated 18 April 2011, 18:21 IST

Chief Minister’s election agent Bikash Bhattacharya alleged that those who had received calls complained that the caller tried to impersonate the voice of the chief minister and spoke in English “in a commanding voice.” Many of those, who received such calls, rang up the CPM party office to inquire about the matter, he said.

The calls were made from a ten-digit number and the caller identifying himself as the CM, asked people to carry out his orders. “But the chief minister does not make calls to individuals just like that,” he pointed out. The mobile phone number had been traced, Bikas said adding the matter had been brought to the notice of CEO Sunil Gupta.

However, Bhattacharya’s fax to the commission’s office earlier in the day triggered some confusion. It was reported that the chief minister received threatening calls from an unidentified caller who asked him to be ‘careful.’ Police were immediately informed and the matter was brought to the notice of the EC.

Later, the confusion was cleared by Bhattacharya himself who alleged that a “concerted move” was on to malign the chief minister by making telephone calls in his name.
