'State will be child labour free by 2012'

Replying to a question raised by N L Narendra Babu (Congress), Bachegowda said, the State government had prepared an action plan for elimination of child labour practices in 2001. The State should have been declared child labour free by 2007.

However, the action plan was extended till 2012 following the Centre extending its projects on child labour for the 11th five year plan. The State government had released Rs 18.91 crore for elimination of child labour since 2001. He pointed out that a mid-term evaluation of the action plan has been conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC). The number of child labour cases had come down over the years, he said. If child labour is found in hazardous occupation, a fine of Rs 20,000 is imposed on the employers.
