Mayoral polls on April 29

Mayoral polls on April 29

For power:

Elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is scheduled to be held on April 29.

According to sources, Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi who is also the polling officer will conduct the elections to be held at 12.30 pm on the day. The nomination process will begin at 8 am. Elections to all the four standing committees of the civic body- public health and education, taxation, appeal and finance, works and town planning will follow Mayoral polls.

With the date set for the new faces to hold reigns, the political activities have gained momentum. The Mayor’s post is reserved for BCM (A) lady and BCM (B) candidate for Deputy Mayor. According to sources, Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) will continue with their truck in the corporation, but with a slight change.

Unlike previous year, where Congress had sacrificed Mayor’s post for its ally JD(S), will seek Mayorship this time. In that case, Congress Corporator Puspalatha T B Chikkanna is likely to adorn the coveted seat, while M J Ravikumar of JD(S) will be the deputy. Both are first time corporators and the higher ups of both the parties are learnt to have supported their candidature. For Ravikumar, who is in the coterie of JD(S) State President H D Kumaraswamy, his chances of becoming the deputy are strong.

Moreover, Pushpalatha’s husband T B Chikkanna was also a corporator who  had served as a Mayor. This may be counter for her worse too, if anybody within the party raises objection for awarding the baton for the second time to the same family.

However, it doesn’t mean there are no contenders for the key post in Congress. Two more lady Corporators Rehana Bhanu and Shamshad Begum (wife of former Mayor Arif Hussain) have expressed their willingness to don the role. But, their chances don’t look too bright, as Ayub Khan belonging to the minorities had decorated the post previously.

Meanwhile, another source said Rehana Bhanu may get lucky if her husband Syed Akram Pasha’s ’s credentials are taken into account. Pasha is a senior Congress leader who has held various posts in the past from block level to youth Congress. Their’s is a family of Congress loyalists, as his father was also a worker of the party.

Sources in BJP said that the saffron party has decided to stay put in opposition as it doesn’t have any card to play.
