Property Tax Board comes into existence

The Board has been constituted by amending the Karnataka Municipalities Act in the recently-concluded Assembly session. The ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation has issued a notification on April 7 consenting for constitution of a five-member Property Tax Board.

An officer not below the rank of chief secretary to government will be the chairman of the Board. Two persons with experience in property tax assessment will be appointed as ex officio members. The term of the members will be of five years.

Hitherto, local bodies had the authority to fix property tax. However, the Board has been constituted in order to streamline the system and on a suggestion by the Union government. The Board will henceforth fix property tax slabs in the limits of all urban local bodies. However, the responsibility of collecting the tax rests on the local bodies, according to the notification.
