Last hurdle to donning the stethoscope

Even 26 years later, Hardayal could not become a doctor as he failed to clear the final year examinations and in between many juniors, some of them by several years, went on to become his teachers.

According to varsity officials, Hardayal may also have ragged many of the teachers, some of whom could also be professors, as they might have been junior to him.

“It is really humiliating to be taught by someone, whom you may have ragged once”, quipped an ‘old'  MBBS student, who like Hardayal, has also been failing for the past 15 years.

“Many of us are in our 40s and we find it very embarrassing to sit with younger students in the class...they (younger ones) laugh at us', he said.

The teachers also face similar predicament. “Some of the old students were senior to us and they had ragged us, when we got admitted...and now we are their teachers”, said a varsity teacher.

The varsity's record shows that there were more than ten students in the MBBS final year exams this year, who have been appearing at the examinations for the past 15 years but have not been able to clear it.

According to sources, the varsity also wants such ‘old' students to pass the examination and leave the campus but finds it helpless to do anything in this regard. “We also desperately want them to pass and will do everything within the rules to help them”, quipped a varsity teacher.

The varsity feels that such ‘old timers’ were in fact a burden on it and the sooner they leave the better. Incidentally, such old students do not have to pay the tution fee. They may appear in the examinations only after paying the exam fee, officials said.

The varsity can not expel such students as the Medical Council of India (MCI) rules provide that a student, once he secures admission to the MBBS course, may appear for the examinations any number of times. There is no bar on the number of appearances.

It would be interesting to see whether these die hards’ are able to clear the examinations and  become doctors. It will also be a test of their will power to keep on appearing in the examinations despite being unsuccessful.
