"I grant permission to the petitioners (couple) for adoption of the male child born on December 4, 2009," District Judge Pratibha Rani said, adding that it would be in the welfare of the minor if the adoption plea is allowed.

The couple, Karthik Vasanth Kumar and Sangeetha Kumar, had got married on July 13, 1998. They do not have their own biological child and had adopted a girl child earlier.

The court allowed the couple to adopt the one-and-a-half- year-old child, which was found abandoned at Kuber hospital here on December 4, 2009. He was later transferred from the hospital to the office of Delhi Council for Child Welfare at Civil Lines.

Loraine Campos, Adoption Officer of Delhi Council for Child Welfare, testified that the institution has no objection if the present petition of adopting the male child is allowed.
Karthik and Sangeetha in their plea said they had earlier adopted a girl child, who is now over two-year-old, and in order to complete their family they have decided to adopt a male child.

The court examined the gross monthly salary of Karthik, a general manager with a Gurgaon-based private firm, and said with his monthly salary pegged at over Rs 1.6 lakh he would be able to secure the future of his family, including his adopted children.

"It can be inferred that Karthik is capable of maintaining himself, his wife, earlier adopted daughter as well as the male child to be adopted and it will be in the welfare of the minor if the prayer of the petitioners is allowed," the court said.
