Soldier laid to rest

Nayana, wife of  Lt Col Chowrira Vishrant Nanjappa  (34), who was killed in a helicopter crash, offers floral tributes to the mortal remains of her husband at Hodduru in Kodagu district on Monday. DH PHOTO

The mortal remains were consigned to flames with his wife Nayana lighting the pyre. An army unit led by Maj Bharadwaj offered a gun salute to its departed colleague.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly K G Bopaiah, legislator M P Appachuranjan, zilla panchayat president Ravi Kushalappa, deputy commissioner K H Ashwathnarayana Gowda, superintendent of police Manjunath K Annigeri and others paid floral tributes to the soldier in Madikeri.

Later, the body was taken to Hodduru, where the public paid their last respects to the departed soldier at the primary school grounds. His widow Nayana and their 19-month-old daughter Sneha, and his aged  father Chowrira Nanaiah, also paid homage. The body was later taken to Chowrira Nanaiah’s house, where the last rites were conducted.
