The 25-year-old Maharashtrian, who drubbed the Philippines’ Alvin Ambatali Barbero 4-0 on Tuesday evening, conjured another brilliant show, scoring a brilliant victory to emerge overall top seed for the pre-quarterfinals starting on Thursday. Seven-time world champion Pankaj Advani, Kamal Chawla and IH Manudev were the other host cueists who booked their tickets for the knockout stage.

In the last-16 clash on Thursday, Mehta takes on Iran’s Mohd Lababi, Advani will play UAE’s Shehab, Manudev locks horns with China’s Tian Pengfai and Chawla will cross swords with China’s Jin Long.

The quarterfinals will take place in the evening, with the semifinals scheduled for Friday and the  final on Saturday.
