Outgoing mayor wants more teeth

This was how the outgoing Mayor Sandesh Swamy described the ‘hot seat’ as, exhorting the government to delegate the head of the city with more teeth, to have his or her say, at least during situations where tasks need to be driven faster.

Addressing media here on Wednesday, the mayor who has brought out a book on his achievements, said those in chair should be vested with executive power to take decision on works within the range of      ` 50,000 to `  one lakh.

Helpless head

Now, the mayor can only instruct, but cannot force upon the decision, as the bureaucrats are involved in every process. “I get enormous requests from people with woes, and I am helpless”, said mayor.

Fortunate to win award

Saying that he was more than fortunate, for the city winning first prize for cleanliness, best management award for Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) works among two others during his tenure, the mayor owed it to all - staffers to people of the city.

Claiming that, the city witnessed several welfare programmes during his tenure, the mayor said, as many as 6,800 tipper lorry loads of debris was cleared, construction of night shelters for those without roof to sleep during night, has made a beginning from Gaadi Chowka, aid of  ` one crore for taking development works in all the wards, work order issued for heritage core project estimated a t` 39 crore order surrounding Town Hall etc.,

The revenue generated by the local body for offering various services is sufficient for keeping the show running-maintenance of roads, streetlights, water supply, sweeping and several others, but for development works, it’s inevitable to depend on the central grants.
