Last Updated 24 July 2009, 18:04 IST

Karamjit Singh, who was working as a physical training instructor in Government Senior Secondary school, Sector 47, here, was reportedly annoyed with some students who had violated the school dress code. An official of the education department said they had received a complaint that Singh made the “errant” students of Class XI to take rounds of the school ground with their boots tied round their necks.

The official confirmed that the teacher, who was initially asked to proceed on leave, had now been dismissed by the Chandigarh administration. Education secretary Ram Niwas, who took a serious view of the incident, ordered termination of the teacher, official said.

Meanwhile, the education secretary has ordered a magisterial inquiry into another case of corporal punishment which came to light on Thursday after the mother of a seven-year-old boy complained that her son was repeatedly slapped for failing to recite the table of seven by his class teacher. The mother complained to the administration that her son who studied in Class III in St Johns’ High School, was terrified after the incident and was refusing to go to school.
