It was a day of protests in Hassan city, on Tuesday. Several organisations, under various banners got down to the streets, pressing the authorities concerned for the fulfilment of their demands.

Members of the State Construction Labourers Association staged a protest demonstration near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, alleging largescale corruption in the district Labour department.

They alleged that the applications from the beneficiaries seeking financial help for marriage ceremony, death, mishap, education and medical expenses have not been cleared since a long time.

The officials, when contacted, say as they are facing work pressure the applications are being diverted to the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office in Chikkamagaluru.  They also alleged that middlemen were fleecing illiterate labourers.

Some of the beneficiaries have received only 20 to 30 per cent of the medical expenses, and demanded Rs 2 lakh for medical expenditure.

Bank employees

Employees of Kaveri Grameena Bank stopped the transactions and staged a protest in front of the bank, against privatisation of rural banks and urging fulfillment of their demands.

They alleged that the Centre is succumbing to the pressure of the corporates and trying to privatise rural banks. The employees demanded regularisation of contract employees and implementation of the 10th two-party agreement.

Students protest

Opposing the change in the KSRTC bus route, in the city, and demanding a railway overbridge near the new bus stand from N R Circle, members of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and ABVP staged separate protests in the city.

They formed a human chain near N R Circle and blocked the road for a while. Later, they took out a protest march up to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The protesters claimed that the change in the bus routes would inconvenience hundreds of rural students, who commute to the city to attend schools and colleges.

They demanded that the earlier bus route be resumed. They warned of intensified protests if the railway overbridge work is not commenced at the earliest.
