Ranganathappa, father of twelve-year-old Kavya had decided to marry his daughter off to a man from Dabbeghatta village  on May 5 and wedding invitations had already been distributed.

Child Development Officer K M Malleshaiah who was tipped off about the incident, met the parents and told them that the marriage would be illegal. But in vain.

Instead, the parents claimed that Kavya was 18-year-old and refused to put off the wedding.

It is learnt that Kavya’s father had brought pressure on the officer, using his political clout.
Irked by this, officer Malleshaiah obtained Kavya’s birth certificate from the school where she was a student, which confirmed Kavya’s age as 12 years.

Malleshaiah accompanied by the police inspector came to the village and asked Ranganath to give an undertaking that he would not marry off his minor daughter.  Circle Inspector K R Chandrashekhar warned him of stringent punishment, if he fails to keep his word.
