While these couples were happy for finding their soul-mates, Guruprasad Charitable Trust of Mundkur and Mumbai based entrepreneur Ragu T Shetty had a sense of satisfaction as it was these two names who organised the mass marriage for the 71 couples.

The couples were given ‘Mangalsutra’ (weighing 10 grams), saree, dhoti-shawl, peta etc. Sumptuous food was provided for the couples and their families at the temple.  Addressing the gathering, Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple Head Lakshminarayana Asranna said that Raghu T Shetty has become a model for hundreds of entrepreneurs who have made it big in Mumbai.

Lakshman Padubidri, whose daughter got married in the mass marriage, said that purchasing even a gram of gold is difficult for economically backward families today.

“In such a scenario, Raghu T Shetty has come forth to bear all expenses of the marriage. This is an emotional programme where people who are in no way related to us are doing all the things that even our own relatives would not do,” Lakshman Padubirdi said.

Raghu T Shetty recalled that the first mass marriage programme organised by him had only four couples, which rose to seven in second year.  Third year there were eight couples while fourth year as many as 15 couples tied the knot. He said that last year there were 27 couples and this being the 6th year, the numbers shot up to 71. “I am expecting the numbers to grow next year,” he said.
