The body of  Sarika, a  student of the Annie Besant College in the Ponnekkal panchayat of Khammam district, was found on the college premises by the police on Saturday. The incident that came to light a week after the murder had sent shock waves among the students and teachers.  Udham Raju, attender of the college, was arrested on the charge of murdering the girl. Udham Raju was allegedly in love with Sarika, a native of Kottur village,  and used to send her SMSs.

Even as the college was closed for summer vacation, Raju used to be on the campus. Sarika left home on May Day saying that she got a message around 8:20 am. Her mobile was switched off  from 8:30 am on that day. Her parents who were trying to contact Sarika on her mobile, later lodged a missing complaint with the Khammam Rural Police. The police got to know about Raju from one of her friends.  Upon further inquiry, the police came to know that Raju had tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide two days ago, but was saved by doctors.

With the doctors’ report in hand, the police confronted Raju and after thorough interrogation, he confessed to have  slit Sarika’s throat and buried the body in a pit. He claimed that he and Sarika were in love, but she had been indifferent with him in the recent days. He killed her after she refused to marry him. Khammam police exhumed her body and sent it for postmortem. The district collector had announced a compensation of Rs 50, 000 to the family of Sarika.
