NAAC director rues decline in research quality

Speaking at a panel discussion on the problems and challenges before the State universities here on Sunday, Dr Ranganath noted: “The universities are no longer castles of knowledge and innovative inventions”

He noted that State universities continued to be the backbone of higher education even after the advent of various private, deemed and autonomous varsities. “A large number of students study in these universities. The need of the hour is to strengthen the academic, physical and moral ambience of our State universities,” he said.

Emphasising on the need to improve the quality of research in universities, Dr N.R Shetty, former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University said research in the State universities had come to a standstill and a university without research is like a temple without an idol.

Functional academic autonomy was also discussed at great length. It was felt that, autonomy, to a large extent has helped in advancing the area of research.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has organised the discussion.
