Pirates of the Indian cinema

Last Updated 26 July 2009, 12:02 IST

“The producers who take all the risk are not being able to monetize their creations as they are going into the hands of the pirates,” says Farokh Balsara fromErnst and Young.

As the revenue streams for the industry grow, so do the losses to each of the stream.

For example, though piracy hits the theatrical revenue of a film first, it is the home video market that gets hit the most. According to the CEO of Moser Baer, Harish Gada, piracy eats up close to 90% of his market. “What we get by legitimate sale is just the residue of the market,” he says.
