Anusha of suburban Selaiyur near Tambaram, who graduated in business administration from a private university here, was threatened by a caller to come to a certain residence nearby. If she failed, her “college-day picnic pictures will” be uploaded on the Internet, the caller threatened.

Police in Selaiyur said Anusha had contacted her former MBA classmate Vinod Kumar immediately. Kumar reportedly asked her to come to his residence at Mahalakshmi Nagar to help her get out of the tangle.

Anusha reached Vinod’s house only to be pushed into a room by Kumar and locked up. Kumar then allegedly asked her to ring up her father, Apparao, a businessman, demanding a ransom of Rs 40 lakh to secure her release.

Apparao rushed to the Selaiyur police station on Monday evening and lodged a complaint. The police advised him to follow the abductor’s instructions while they laid a trap to nab him.

Asked repeatedly over the phone to come from one place to another with the cash in hand, the girl’s father anxiously moved around until the caller told him that one Kanagavel would come to collect the money at a spot in Medavakkam near Selaiyur.

Kanagavel was nabbed just as he was about to collect the cash. Police then rushed to Vinod Kumar’s residence and nabbed him. Anusha who had been locked up in a room in his house was freed and handed over to her father, sources said.

The Tambaram magistrate remanded both Vinod and Kanagavel to judicial custody on Tuesday. Vinod reportedly told the police that he had resorted to this trick to make money out of frustration with his low-paying job after completing his MBA.
