Citizens helped EC conduct fair polls

During the elections, according to sources, the Commission received a large number of specific complaints and suggestions through e-mails and via post from the people of poll-bound Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal.

“This actually helped the Commission to a great extent in successfully conducting elections by making appropriate arrangements. Many of these letters and e-mails actually gave specific information about violation of rules. The EC inquired upon those complaints and took action to ensure a free and fair polling exercise,” an EC official said.

Some of the information from common people also led to the seizure of unaccounted money in poll-bound states, the official said.Income Tax Department seized about Rs 22 crore unaccounted cash from individuals in five states where Assembly elections were underway and also detected tax evasion to the tune of Rs 50-60 crore.
