Palike health dept to go under knife

The health department of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to undergo a major surgery after having come under fire during a meeting chaired by Mayor Sharadamma and Commissioner Siddaiah on Tuesday.

At the end of a six-hour long marathon meeting, the Palike decided to curtail the number of medical officers (health), who are presently 25 in number.

In the meeting, it was decided that two more posts of the deputy health officers (DHO) would be created to make it eight, so that each of them could serve in the eight BBMP zones.

The eight DHOs would be responsible for implementing TB control programme, H1N1 control measures, mosquito control, containing vector-borne diseases and many other national programmes.

In view of the complaints flooding the Palike office about poor garbage collection, an extensive inspection drive will begin next week to review the works done by the health officers.

Severe criticism

The Commissioner reportedly told the health officers that the Palike is facing severe criticism because of garbage littered in every nook and corner of the city.

"The Commissioner asked the health officers to build an image for themselves by improving their work or get prepared to face the music," said a Palike officer.
