FUCC crush Vultures on way to title

Last Updated 26 July 2009, 16:54 IST

On the final day of the two-day match, FUCC knocked off the 139 required for an outright win, riding on Kunal Kapoor’s unbeaten 53 to reach 140 for five.

FUCC thus finished on top of the league table with 36 points while Social Cricketers (32) settled for the runners-up spot.

On Saturday’s opening day, Vultures found DV Anish too hot to handle as they capitulated to a modest 147. Anish (5/32) and fellow left-arm spinner N Naveen (2/44) spelt doom for Vultures, only KV Bharath (39) showing a semblance of a fight.

FUCC, however, failed to capitalise on the good work of their bowlers as their batsmen found the going tough against Anirudha Joshi. The off-spinner returned an impressive haul of six for 49, restricting FUCC to 172 all out, a lead of a mere 25 runs. B Akhil was the top-scorer with 40 while Shyam Ponnappa chipped in with 30.

Vultures fared marginally better in their second innings to manage 163 runs, but the eventual target of 139 wasn’t going to trouble FUCC too much. Medium-pacer Imran Khan picked up four for 33 while Naveen claimed three for 26 to hasten Vultures’ collapse in the second innings.

Brief scores: Vultures CC: 147 all out (KV Bharath 39, Asghar Pasha 29; Anish DV 5-32, N Naveen 2-44) and 163 all out (Murari 26; Imran Khan 4-33, B Naveen 3-26) lt to Friends Union Cricket Club: 172 all out (B Akhil 40, Shyam Ponnappa 30, Sunil Raju 29; Anirudha Joshi 6-49) and 140/5 (Kunal Kapoor 53 n.o., Shyam Ponnappa 26; Asghar Pasha 3-46).
