Pak board gives Kaneria a chance

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has once again given an opportunity to leg-spinner Danish Kaneria to get clearance from the integrity committee of the board and make himself available to play for the national team.
A senior official of the PCB told PTI that the Board had sent a letter to Kaneria asking him to get a clearance letter from his old county, Essex.
Last year, the Essex police had held a three-month long investigation into allegations of spot-fixing against Kaneria and his Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield during a Pro-40 match against Durham in the 2009 season.
Kaneria was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud on May 15 along with Westfield following the allegations but the Essex police later confirmed that the Pakistani cricketer will not face a criminal prosecution. The Essex police, however charged Westfield, who is now facing a criminal trial.
“We have been asking Danish to provide us with the statement he gave to the Essex police when he was under investigation last year. But he and his lawyer have said the police is not releasing the statement because the case is on and the matter is subjudice,” the official said.
“So now we have asked him to get a clearance letter from Essex, stating he is no longer required in the case. “Once he gets that clearance letter from Essex, who were his employers at the time of the case investigations, the matter will be put to the integrity committee to take a further decision,” he added.
Kaneria, who has not played international cricket since last summer, was picked for the Test series against South Africa in November 2010 but the PCB stopped him from boarding a flight to Dubai to join the team.
He was also not given a new central contract by the PCB last month. Kaneria said that he is keen to make a comeback after getting the clearance from the integrity committee and is also cooperating in every way with the PCB.
The PCB official said that no date has been set for the next meeting of the integrity committee since former captain Shoaib Malik also had not submitted all his documents to the committee.
Malik, interestingly said recently that he had submitted all relevant documents to the board and it was now their decision when to clear him.But the PCB official said some documents were yet to be completed.
“Once everything we asked for is given to us we will call a meeting of the integrity committee to look into both cases,” the Pakistan Cricket Board
official said.
