HC notice to Apollo hosp for not giving certificates to nurse

Last Updated 12 May 2011, 15:53 IST

Issuing notices to the hospital and Ministry of Law and Justice, a division bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said, "She has all the rights. How can you make nurse a slave?"
"Slavery and begging is not prevalent in any part of the world," the court, which posted the matter for further hearing on July 20, said.

Jose Abraham, counsel for Ancy N, told the court that the hospital took all her original certificates at the time of employing her as staff nurse of the hospital on March 1.

The hospital administration first refused to grant her leave to attend her mother, suffering from cancer, in Kerala, the petition said.

Later, the hospital did not accept her offer to resign and even refused to give her back the original certificates, Abraham said.

As efforts to persuade the hospital proved futile, the nurse approached the court saying her only sibling was mentally challenged and she was not allowed to join her mother at their native place in Kerala.

She, in her petition, has sought a direction to the hospital to release her certificates at the earliest.

A direction has been sought to the Law Ministry and Delhi government to frame guidelines to "protect and safeguard" the interests of nurses working at various hospitals.
