As results started pouring in, handing a landslide to the AIADMK front, the workers shouted slogans against Thangkabalu, police said.
The workers, reportedly supporters of senior Congress leader and former Union minister E V K S Elangovan, then burnt Thangkabalu's effigy and demanded that he immediately step down from the post.
Congress is a constituent of the DMK led front.
In the run up to the April 13 polls, Thangkabalu was widely criticised by a section of partymen over selection of candidates, following which he expelled 19 members on April 14, among them former Deputy Mayor of Chennai 'Karate' R Thiagarajan and actor-politician S V Shekher.
