Kuchipudi festival

C Ajay Kumar in streevesham

Senior danseuse Manju Bhargavi under her 'Natya Vedam' organised 'Kuchipudi Nrithyotsav-2011', last week. Four different troupes from Andhra Pradesh provided variety of Kuchipudi items though it was a mixed fare.

Sai Sheela (Eluru) started with a composition on Nataraja in Ragamalika, which can be performed gracefully, with some more higher training. It was followed by a Jathiswara in Athana by the students of Sudheer Rao (Warangal). Portraying 'Dashawathara' in dance is not new. But 5 young students performed a composition of Uthakadu Venkatasubba Iyer pleasingly. The 'Shringarinchu' was by Saint Tyagaraja in the raga Suruti.

Mesmerising dance

Restrained, but impactful Abhinaya of Virahoth Khanditha and Vasikasajjitha Nayika were proof of his talent and good training. Also sung well by Sudharani in ragamalika and composed by Pushpalatha.

The last programme of the evening was a dance drama by the students of Pasumathy Ramalinga Sastry (Hyderabad). Opening with a Ganesha Stuthi, they chose 'Seetha Swayamvara' - the popular theme. With good synchronisation they performed  impressively. Musicians from the wings fulfilled the needs of the occasion. Guru Pashumathi Ramalinga Sastry (Natuvanga), Sudhir Rao and Padma (vocal), Subramanyam and Sreekanth (percussion) and Shivasubramanyam (percussion).

Bheemasethu Vasanthotsava

The "Bheemasethu Vasanthothsava" was held last week, under the joint auspices of Haridasa Seva Samithi and Diyakala Prathistana. Discourses on different Haridasas, music in both Karnatic and Hindustani styles were held in the serene atmosphere of the Bheemanakatte temple, Doddabommasandra. Prasanna Korthi presented compositions of different Haridasas, on Friday evening.

He was accompanied on harmonium by Ashwin Walvakar, Tabla by Keshava Joshi and special effects by Venkatesh Purohith. 'Mukhya Pranadeva' of Jaganatha Dasaru was on Lord Anjaneya and 'Kapadale Sakala' was by Gopala Dasaru. 'Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma' is always a favourite song of connoisseurs.
He also sang a lesser known composition of Vadheendra Teertha "Munnenu Sukruthava" - neatly. After "Aadidano Ranga in a 'Drutha Kaala', "Kolu Kollana" was slightly in the folk style. He sang with his good voice and feeling with simple
tunes.
