Garment workers to protest today

They alleged that the company is functioning in complete violation of some rules and is treating them badly.

“The State Government has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) payable by all employers to Rs 408 per month (increase by Rs 15.69 per day) for 2011-12 effective from April 1, but the company has failed to pay the same to us,” Garment and Textile
Workers’ Union Vice-President K R Jayaram said.

Instead, he claimed that the workers have only received arbitrary raises of Rs 4 to Rs 7 instead of the mandatory uniform raise of Rs 15.69 per day.
Further, the workers have alleged that their conveyance allowance has been deducted in an ‘illegal and arbitrary manner without any reason, consultation or notice to them.’

“The company has, we believe, reduced the conveyance allowance in order to make adjustments as it has marginally increased the DA,” Jayaram said.

The Union has, taken up the matter with the management through a letter to its Managing Director based in Mumbai.

Jayaram told Deccan Herald that the workers had, in this regard, written to the management even on February 25. But the effort went in vain as the management had failed to respond. “We have, therefore, decided to stage a 30-minute protest of Monday,” he added.
