Ambedkar, Basava jayanthi celebrated

He was speaking after inaugurating Basavanna and Dr B R Ambedkar Jayanthi celebrations organised at Nallur village in Chamarajanagar taluk on Sunday.  

The MP said there are similarities between Basavanna and Ambedkar as the both fought against caste system and other social evils plaguing the nation during that time period.

They revolutionised the society through their teachings especially among downtrodden sections of the society. They launched movement for emancipation of caste system, encouraged inter caste marriage, fought for equal rights and opportunities for women.

Basavanna believed in the principle of ‘work is worship’ and encouraged people to earn their livelihood. Ambedkar was also an economist and influenced the economic policies of the Centre to improve the standard of life of dalits, backward and other economically weaker sections of the society. He successfully presented Hindu Code bill which was acclaimed by elected representatives when it was tabled in parliament.

MLA C Puttarangashetty said steps are taken for the construction of cement roads and underground drainage system in 30 select villages in his constituency.  

Chairman of Dr B R Ambedkar Development Corporation A R Krishnamurthy said dalits celebrating Ambedkar and Basaveshwara jayanthi on a same platform is a good sign of social development.  Zilla Panchayat member G S Nithya, lecturer N L Rajendraprasad and others were present.
