Speaking after conferring ‘Bannanje Babu Amin Folk Award-2011’ on veteran Tulu Scholar Dr Palthadi Ramakrishna Achar and veteran Bootharadhane artiste Shankar Pambada Thonse in a programme organised by Kemmalje Janapada Prakashana on Sunday, he said Tulu folk art research works have surpassed all the research works conducted on folk literatures in other parts of the country including Kannada folk literature.

Collection of literature related to folk should include in depth analysis of meaning of folk arts. The work on preserving folk literature must be undertaken simultaneously with the research on folk tradition.

Stating that we have lost rich folk art resources owing to ignorance, Gowda said the folkarts were knowledge of expression of the illiterate people who in turn were well educated in all other aspects except reading and writing. The folk culture like ‘padadana,’ ‘bootharadhane’ were synonymous with struggle against injustice.

“Folk arts are artistes centric. Changes should not be entertained in the folk arts as they may affect the essence of the art. These are the ritual theatres. They should not be harmed by introducing new ideas. External forces should not be allowed to take over,” he said and added, that one should conserve the rareness of the folk arts there by preserving the rich values.
