Last Updated 27 July 2009, 12:25 IST

Subject of controversy

The Ranna memorial at Mudhol has been subject of debate for the past several years.
Way back in 1995, during the 64th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Mudhol, the then chief minister H D Deve Gowda had announced that a memorial would be built for the greattenth-century poet.
But, it was only during  the time that S M Krishna was chief minister that construction of the memorial was kickstarted. It was in the year 2001 that Rs 50 lakh was released for construction.

Blame games continue
Later, the construction was delayed, owing to political blame games. Meanwhile, people here are worried that just at the time the memorial is ready, there could be more trouble brewing. It may be recalled that the poet was born at the then Muduvolal (today’s Mudhol in Bagalkot district) in 949 AD.
His great works include Sahasabheema Vijayam, which is also called Gadayudda.
