Dept of agriculture set to distribute seeds and fertilisers

This year, the district is estimated to require 4,430 quintal of paddy and the officials have requested both State government and the National Seed Board to provide the required amount of seeds for the district.

The department has set target of 8,000 hectare in Madikeri taluk, 11,000 hectare in
Somwarpet taluk and 16,000 hectare in Virajpet taluk for paddy cultivation in the district.

The department aims to grow ‘musukina jola’ (jowar) over 3,500 hectare, Ragi over 500 hectare and tobacco over 250 hectare. The farmers are likely to start sowing paddy seeds by June 15.

The department has asked the National Seed Board to provide 2,000 quintal of ‘Athira’, 270 quintal IR-64, 35 quintal KRH-2 varieties of paddy.

Apart from this 100 quintal Inton, 450 quintal Thunga, 300 quintal B R-2655, 250 quintal IET-7191, 50 quintal Jaya, 500 quintal MTU 1001, 50 quintal IR30864, 125 quintal Thanu and 300 quintal sowing seeds are required.

A total of 695 quintal of hybrid jowar may be required.


Fertiliser distribution has already started based on the demand sent in by Co-operative societies and stock at State Co-operative Marketing Federation in Kushalnagar store.

During April 2,630 tonnes of fertiliser was given to Madikeri taluk as against the demand of 3788 tonnes, 6,381 tonnes for Virajpet taluk as against the demand of 9,104 tonnes and 4,299 tonnes for Somwarpet as against its demand for 5,329 tonnes.

This month a total of 9,789 tonnes of fertiliser have been given to three taluks as against their demand for 20,199 tonnes.

At present State Co-operative Marketing Federation in Kushalnagar has stock of 13,219 tonnes of fertiliser.
