Police to speed up verification for passports

Last Updated 21 May 2011, 19:12 IST

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the commissioner said the police had initiated measures to dispose of such applications within 15 days, in view of complaints that the cops delayed the verification process.

He has directed police inspectors to be available in the station between 10 am and 1 pm every Sunday to redress such grievances. Citizens can meet the respective inspectors at these hours, the commissioner said.

Another officer would look into the matter in the absence of the inspector.  Earlier, a lone officer was assigned the duty. The police received 3,599 applications seeking passport verification between May 16 and 21. They disposed of 2,835 applications. Steps would be taken to speed up the process, he promised.

The police have also been directed to intensify patrolling, during early morning and late evening, to prevent crimes like chain snatching and theft. All officers, including DCPs, ACPs and police inspectors, would be patrolling, he added.
