Talented: Leander Paes

After carving a niche for himself in the world of tennis, Leander Paes is all set to try his luck on the silver screen with Ashok Kohli’s ‘Rajdhani Express’. Though tennis has always been his forte, ask him what made him take up acting and he says that his decision had nothing to do with the ‘razzle-dazzle’ of it all.

“For nearly 16 years, Bollywood offers kept knocking at my door but I never once looked at them. I wanted to concentrate on my game and nothing else.”

“But interestingly, just when I thought the offers would slowly fade away, they actually didn’t. That’s why I thought of giving it a chance,” says Leander, who was in the City for an IPL match.

Leander maybe used to various tennis courts but is he really ready for the glamour world of Bollywood? “Definitely. It’s not different, even in movies, you have the spotlight on you and people are watching every move of yours. I think the transition will be easy. Moreover, I feel the Indian audience is ready for a new me and they will not be disappointed. India has always been a place where one can try new things and take any new idea with a pinch of salt,” says Leander, who is tight-lipped about the project.

Recently, his partner Mahesh Bhupathi too made an entry into movies as a producer but Leander confesses that he has not had a chance to see the movie. “We were in Rome all this while, so I couldn’t catch it at the theaters but he has promised me that the minute the DVD comes out, I will be the first one to get it,” he says.

So what kind of roles is he looking forward to?

“I like the more realistic cinema but I am not going to restrict myself to certain kinds of roles. I have just put one foot in so far. Let’s see where this takes me,” he signs off.
