A resident of Basaveshwaranagar, Raj has secured admission into the University of Bedfordshire for a Master in Science (MS) programme in Computer Animation.

BBMP Mayor Sharadamma presented him with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh. BWSSB Minister S Suresh Kumar and Palike Commissioner Siddaiah were also present on the occasion, on Tuesday.

Raj, whose course will begin in September, will be applying for visa this week.
Speaking to mediapersons after receiving the cheque, Navin Raj said his fortune changed when he came to know about the scholarship instituted by the BBMP from an officer at a nationalised bank, where he had applied for an education loan.

“Eight months ago I had enquired about scholarships in the BBMP. I was lucky enough to find one,” he said.

Elated on being able to help a deserving student from the dalit community, the Mayor hoped that more students among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes pursued higher studies with determination.

Scholarships such as the one offered by the Palike will go a long way in encouraging students from oppressed communities to aspire for higher studies, she added.

First tree park

Also speaking on the occasion, BWSSB Minister S Suresh Kumar said the proposal to start a first large scale tree park, on a six-acre of land near Pushpanjali theatre, will provide for the much needed lung space in the City. The proposed tree park will be located adjacent to a four-acre land, which will be converted into a playground for children.
