An underpass to add to an epic fail

There appears to be no respite to people of Kadirehanahalli who are already fed up with the much-delayed the underpass, as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning an infrastructure surgery at the spot to rectify a major blunder, that would cost the taxpayers Rs 10 -12 crore.

It is a comment on the lack of foresight on part of the Palike engineers. Three years after starting the underpass at Kadirenahalli, they have now realised that what they have built is a brand new accident zone at the intersection of the road going to Kumaraswamy Layout and DG Petrol Pump.

To rectify the blunder, the Palike has now decided to construct another underpass adjacent to the just-built underpass, to avoid accidents at the intersection of the road to Kumaraswamy Layout. The traffic police had recommended the new underpass to avoid accidents.

A hasty act

"When the Centre launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), the Palike officials planned Kadirenahalli underpass along with other grade separators in a haste to grab the Central fund, but now they have realised that their blunder would claim many lives if not rectified well in time," said the sources.

However, the pretext the Palike is citing to build the new underpass is that it is a signal-free corridor from Nayandahalli junction up to Bannerghatta Road.

Well-placed sources in the Palike added that the detailed project report of the new underpass is almost ready, and would be cleared by the engineer-in-chief.
It would then be sent to the commissioner and the major works standing committee for approval.

Unlike the existing underpass, the proposed underpass would not affect private properties but only a few central government properties. A temple that would come in the way of the new project would be shifted elsewhere, the sources said.
