Briefing reporters, Google India Head of Products Vinay Goel said “this would complement our maps and  location identification products and would add visual dimension to identify places.”

Assuring that the service will not be a threat to people’s privacy or security, he said faces of people and number plates of cars will be blurred through a special technology.

The service will only capture streets and thoroughfares. Any private information accidentally caught by camera will be taken off. “We have a ‘report problems’ button which people can use to let us know the issues. We have a team sitting here to solve them real-time,” he said.

“The real goal is to identify houses, street level house code etc. Once we have the imagery, the house number is visible, looking for that house, I can find it. Even fire or ambulance department would no how to locate it as it would make scoping the area easier,” he added.

Street View would provide additional dimension to student’s learning of museums and other historical places and pointed out Google Art project where Street View’s technology was used to provide 360 view of museums and art works.
