Q My nails are brittle and weak. Please suggest tips on how to get strong nails.

A Include an adequate amount of protein and calcium in your diet. Skimmed milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, sprouts, lentils, beans are high in protein. Take your doctor’s advice before making changes in your diet. Follow a 10-day programme of taking gelatin. Dissolve one teaspoon gelatin in a little boiling water. Cool the water and add it to fruit juice. Have this daily for 10 days. If you have brittle nails, avoid frosted nail varnish. File nails with an emery board rather than metal nail file. Also, file in one direction only and not back and forth.

QI am a 17-year-old girl and I am short for my age. I want to grow taller. Can that be achieved with an intense workout?I am actively involved in sports  at school.

A It’s great to know that you devote quality time to staying fit. Keep it up. As for your height, at this age and taking into consideration your gender, it could be a challenge. Women tend to stop growing taller after 17-18 years of age. However, do not lose hope. Continue staying active, remember to eat nutritious food (fruits, vegetables, sprouts, lentils, egg, fish, lean meat, nuts and seeds) and have a positive outlook.
