Now, piracy is a serious offence in State

These were the remarks made by some members in the Assembly on Friday. All these and more was said while taking part in the debate on the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers (Amendment) Bill, 2009 piloted by Home Minister V S Acharya.
The Bill has provision for detaining persons who are into piracy of audio and video cassettes of cinemas for commercial gains, under the act. Earlier, immoral traffic offenders and slum grabbers were detained under the act.

Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah said that there was no point in having legislation when the rules were not enforced and making new rules when law-breakers were not being punished.

The Parappana Agrahara prison inmates were supplied with cell phones, biriyani, drugs etc. Such things were happening because the police were not doing their job, Siddaramaiah alleged.

After nine MLAs spoke on the issue, Acharya said that the feedback was good. Later, the Bill was passed by the House.
